The Logitech G920 racing wheel is designed to offer users a realistic gaming experience on consoles as well as Windows and macOS PCs. In addition to compatible device drivers, you also need to have the latest Logitech Gaming Software (LGS) app to use the G920 on a personal computer (PC). 

Though designed to allow for seamless compatibility and simplified operation, the G920 does not always work as expected. Over the years, the racing wheel has been reported to develop different problems. For instance, your operating system (OS) or game may fail to detect the racing wheel. 

Other problems associated with the G920 range from intermitted functioning of the Force Feedback feature to a blue screen when you connect the USB port. Throughout this guide, you will learn what causes the Logitech g920 not to work and several methods you can use to fix the problem. 

If the racing wheel is not being detected or is unresponsive, you should consider uninstalling the Logitech G920 driver and the Logitech Gaming Software. You should then unplug its USB cable from the PC and restart the computer to fix the issue. 

Updating the Windows operating system to the KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251) version can also fix the Logitech G920 not working problem. Depending on the racing wheel issue you are experiencing on your PC, several other methods may also be used to resolve the issue, as illustrated below. 

What Causes the Logitech G920 Not to Work? 

Different problems are known to affect the functioning and performance of this racing wheel on both Windows and macOS operating systems. Here are some of the common G920 not working on PC issues and their causes:

Force Feedback Goes Off Intermittently 

Just as is the case with the G29 Logitech racing wheel, the G920 has dual motors that are meant to offer force feedback, but just for the supported games. To prevent the wheel from damage the dual-motor force feedback system features an overheat protection circuit.

If used under high-temperature operating conditions, or the motors happen to overheat due to extended use, the Force Feedback functionality may be disabled to prevent damage. Even so, it is not common for the force feedback feature to go off and leave the controls working. 

If this happens, you need to disconnect the racing wheel from the PC and allow it enough time to cool down before trying to use it again. 

Windows Update 

In most cases, the Logitech G920 racing wheel starts to malfunction following an update to the Windows operating system. This is particularly the case for the Windows 10 update KB4074588—the Microsoft update (OS Build 16299.248) has been proven to affect USB support on Win 10 PCs. 

If you started experiencing G920 problems after updating the OS, you should consider updating your Windows OS to the KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251) version. If the racing wheel is not being detected after an update, you need to uninstall the G920 driver, unplug the wheel from the PC, and then uninstall the LGS app. 

Next, you need to restart the PC  plug the G920 wheel into a USB port on the PC, install the right LGS app, and restart the PC to install device drivers automatically. 

Setup Problems 

The racing wheel can also malfunction simply because it is not mounted or connected properly. Such an issue will most likely affect the functioning of the clutch pedal or cause the pedals to be unresponsive. If experiencing such a problem, ensure that the pedal unit is the proper connection to the wheel unit. 

Additionally, you should check whether the wheel unit is connected to power, and that wheel is connected to the PC via USB. Some games are also known to invert clutch pedal controls on the Logitech G920. You may also experience clutch issues on the G920 because the controls have not been mapped out correctly. 

To fix the problem, you should verify pedal settings using the control options for that particular game or through the LGS app where applicable. 

Digital Signature Error 

You may get a digital signature error when you install the Logitech Gaming  Software on a Windows 7 PC. As a minimum, recent LGS versions require you to have the Security Update for Windows 7 Systems (KB3033929) installed on your Windows 7 PC. This update is meant to add support for SHA-2 driver verification and signaling functionality. 

Without the security update, you are likely to encounter problems when using the LGS app on Windows 7. 

Blue Screen G920 Issue 

Some gamers have reported getting a blue screen when they attach the Logitech racing wheel to a USB port on their PCs. If you are getting a blue screen upon connecting the wheel, disconnect it from the PC, download the WheelDriverCleaner.exe tool to the PC, and run it, as explained later in this guide. 

G920 Crashes the Game Until Force Feedback is Disabled 

In yet other cases, the racing wheel has been reported to crash PC games as long as the force feedback feature is enabled. If yours is behaving this way, try playing the game with the force feedback feature disabled. If the games do not crash with the feature disabled, something is wrong with the driver files. 

To resolve the problem, you need to uninstall the buggy Logitech G920 drivers currently installed on your PC and install them afresh. 

How to Fix the Logitech G920 Not Working Problem on PC 

Both the G29 and the G920 racing wheels may be used to play video games on a PC. In this regard, the racing wheels are supported by Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. While this is the case, you need to have the Logitech Gaming Software  (LGS) 8.70  or later installed on the PC as well in order to get full functionality. 

Even with these installed and the wheel configured accordingly, you may still encounter a problem every once in a while. Discussed below are some of the most effective solutions to the Logitech G920 not working problem: 

Method 1: Install the Latest Microsoft Update 

A considerable number of Windows 10 users started having problems with their G920 racing wheel following an upgrade to the Windows 10 update KB4074588. In an effort to remedy the USB connectivity problem caused by this upgrade, Microsoft released the update KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251). 

If the racing wheel stopped working shortly after an update, installing the update KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251) can fix it. Assuming that you have a working Keyboard/ mouse attached to the PC, here is how you should go about it: 

Step 1: On your browser, navigate to the Microsoft Update Catalog page. Look for the latest version of the file that is compatible with your OS, and download it to the PC. For instance, the second option on the update catalog page is meant for 86x-based operating systems. 

If your PC is running on a 64x-based OS, you should choose the third option on this page. 

Step 2: Once the file has been downloaded, navigate to the download folder on your PC and double-click on the executable update file you just downloaded. 

Step 3: This will launch the Installation Wizard on your desktop. Just follow the on-screen prompts as displayed by the wizard to install the update. 

Alternatively: 

You can also install the required update through the Windows 10 Recovery  Environment (WinRE). This method will come in handy if you do not have a working keyboard/ mouse connected to the PC. The following procedure will help you install the update through WinRE:

Step 1: Restart the PC just before Windows finishes loading the desktop. Repeat this three times in a row. This will automatically start the Windows 10 Recovery  Environment on your PC.

Step 2: After the system has booted into WinRE, click on Troubleshoot and select ‘Advanced  Options. Next, select the ‘Startup Settings’ option. Now click on the Restart button—located in the bottom-right corner of the Startup Settings window. 

Step 3: At this point, you need to press the 5 buttons on the keyboard to enter the ‘Safe Mode with Networking

Step 4: Once the PC has booted into the Safe Mode, press the Windows + I keys simultaneously to launch the Windows Settings menu. From the settings menu, navigate to Update and Security>  Windows Update> install the latest updates. 

Method 2: Uninstall then Re-install G920 Drivers 

If corrupted or outdated, the G920 driver on your PC can also affect the functioning if the racing driver. To fix the problem, it is advisable to uninstall the current driver installation from the computer, then install the latest compatible version, as follows: 

Step 1: Open the Device Manager 

Press the Windows + R keys on the keyboard simultaneously to open a Run dialog box. Type device manager into the dialog box and press the Enter key to run it. Now select Device Manager from the results to open it. 

Alternatively, you could press the Windows + Pause|Break key combination to display the System Information window. Now click on the Device Manager link towards the left side of the window. 

Step 2: Locate the G920 Controller 

Click on the ‘+’ adjacent to the Human Interface Devices (HID) section on the Device Manager window to expand it. Now scroll down the displayed list of devices to find your G920 racing wheel. Normally, there will be a USB and a HID component. 

Step 3: Uninstall the Logitech Racing Wheel Drivers 

Select one of the driver components—either HID or USB component as both need to be removed—and right-click on it. Choose Uninstall from the context menu that pops up. Check the ‘Delete the driver software for this device’ option on the Uninstall Device window and click on Next or OK to begin. 

You may be promoted to ‘Restart the computer now’. If you choose Yes, the PC will restart and complete the installation after the reboot. Alternatively, you could select No, wait until you have removed all the components before restarting the computer. 

Step 4: Uninstall the Other Component 

Repeat Step 3 to remove the other component of the Logitech G920 driver from  your computer  

Note: If you have installed different driver versions for the racing wheel, there will be multiple driver components that need to be uninstalled. Be sure to uninstall all the G920 driver components from your computer, one-after-another. 

Step 5: Restart the PC 

Check to ensure that you have uninstalled all the Logitech racing wheel driver components from the computer before restarting it. After rebooting, the racing wheel will have Windows stock drivers assigned to both the HID and USB components. 

By default, these will be the HID Compliant Device and the USB Input Device on your computer. The racing wheel may work just fine with Windows drivers, but some features may not be available. For enhanced experience, it is advisable to install the latest, compatible Logitech G920 drivers on the PC. 

Step 6: Install New Logitech Drivers 

Navigate to the official Logitech downloads website to download the latest G920 racing wheel driver that is compatible with your PC. Once the file has been downloaded, open the downloads folder and double-click on the installer to open the Installation Wizard window. 

Just follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation before restarting the PC for the changes to take effect. 

Method 2: How to Fix G920 No Force Feedback Issue on a PC 

The force feedback feature on your Logitech G920 racing wheel can fail in several ways, each of which calls for a different remedy, as explained below: 

When the Pedals are Unresponsive 

If the pedals on the left unit of the racing wheel do not respond, check whether the wheel unit is properly connected to power—the power port on this unit is normally positioned on the underside of the wheel unit. Next check whether the pedal unit is connected to the wheel unit, and that the wheel is connected to the PC via USB. 

If connected properly, the wheel should rotate fully in each direction then to its center for accurate calibration. To help with the calibration, you need to have Logitech Gaming Software 8.70 or later installed on the PC. If all the components are properly mounted and connected, check whether the pedals are properly mapped to pedal functions on the control options for the game. 

Some games are known to invert pedal controls  which may also cause them to be unresponsive. As such, it is advisable to map the pedal functions accordingly on the control options/settings for the game. 

Clutch Pedal Malfunction 

To begin with, you need to understand that the proper functioning of the clutch pedal on the G9200 is dependent on the Driving Force Shifter attachment. If this appears to be in working order, ensure that the game you are playing actually supports the G920 clutch pedal functionality—refer to the compatibility information for the game. 

If the game is compatible, but the clutch is still unresponsive, you need to configure the clutch pedal controls for the game accordingly. Verify that the pedal settings on the game control options as well as on the LGS are configured properly. 

Method 3: Add Profile(s) Using the Logitech Gaming Software (LGS)

As of release 8.91, the LGS features support for about 600 games. As such, the software is designed to automatically scan for and set up relevant game profiles during the initial setup. If you happen to add more games to the PC at a later date, you can just rescan for supported games and have the software import profiles for the new games. 

Game profiles on the G920 are essentially used to customize such aspects ad the Gkey/ function key, lighting, and pointer command assignment for each game. The software also allows you to use a single profile for all games and apps on your PC. However, this may cause the Logitech G920 racing wheel not to work for some games. 

If the racing wheel is not working on one or several games on your PC, try setting up a profile(s) for the problematic game(s). Two different methods may be used to set up game profiles for the G920 racing wheel, as explained below: 

Scanning for New Games 

As you may be aware, gaming profiles on the Logitech  Gaming  Software are created using registry entries from Battle.net, Steam, Origin, or uPlay. Most of the game profiles are linked to the Steam registry entry, while some are associated with multiple publisher registry entries. 

Scanning for new games using the LGS will automatically add the relevant game profiles for the newly-added games. To do this: 

Step 1: Launch the Logitech Gaming Software on the desktop and then navigate to the Home window for the input device. 

Step 2: Depending on the Steering wheel model you have, select ‘Customize Function Keys’ ‘Customize Buttons’ or ‘Customize G-keys’. Next, click on the ‘Scan for New Games’ button on the Profiles pane. 

Step 3: Wait until the Profile is done scanning to click on the OK button. This will automatically save the newly-added game profiles to your list. The profile(s) you just added should now appear on the Profiles pane. 

Adding New Game Profiles Manually 

If scanning for new games did not add a profile for the new game, you need to create one manually. Otherwise, the G920 gaming wheel will not work for the new game on your PC. The LGS app is designed to store any executable (.exe) program file. 

You can leverage this capability to customize command assignments for productivity programs on your PC. If you would rather create a profile for a game on your PC manually, here is the procedure you need to follow: 

Step 1: Open the LGS on your PC and navigate to the home window for the input device. Next, select Customize buttons, Customize G-keys or Customize Function keys depending on the device model. 

Step 2: Now click on the ‘Create new profile’ (“+”) sign to open the New Profile window. Fill the Name and Description fields with distinct content that is unique to the game you are creating the profile for. 

Step 3: Once done, click on the “+” symbol and then navigate to the installation folder for the new game using the Windows Explorer Open window. Locate the executable (.exe) game file in the installation folder, select it, and then click on the Open button. 

Note: it is possible to assign multiple executable files to a single profile on the LSG app.

Step 4: Now check the ‘Lock Profile’ checkbox to prevent other applications from running while the game profile is running. If you would like to use lighting, pointer, or even command assignment from another game profile, check the ‘copy from an existing profile’ option.

You should then select the profile you would like to copy from the drop-down menu.

Step 5: Finally, click on the OK button to save the changes and add the new profile. The profile you just created should now appear in the profiles pane. 

Final Verdict 

Though designed to offer an enhanced user experience and a more realistic game experience, the G920 racing wheel can malfunction in several ways. Ranging from unresponsive pedals to the wheel not working in some games, different issues are known to affect the racing wheel. 

If the wheel stopped working after a Windows update, you should consider installing the update  KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251). You also need to ensure that the racing wheel is properly mounted and connected to the PC.
