Nonetheless, whatever the case may be, you should fix it immediately with the steps I detailed in the next section when you discover this problem.

How to Fix Discord Lagging Issues

Fortunately, fixing your discord lagging problem does not require any complicated operation. Sometimes you may need to reinstall the discord app to fix it. Nonetheless, you can simply fix this issue by carefully following a few guidelines that I’m going to show you. 

The solutions below will help you get your discord app running smoothly.

Solution 1: End all Unnecessary Programs

One of the main causes of the Discord lagging issue is a software conflict. If you’re running multiple programs on your PC, one of the programs is likely to conflict with Discord. You can turn off unnecessary programs while running Discord by following the steps below.

If you are using Windows 7, follow the steps below.

Step 1:  Right-click your taskbar and click on Start Task Manager.
Step 2: Click on the Processes tab and check your current CPU. Also, check memory usage to see what processes are using your resources the most.
Step 3: Right-click on the resource-consuming process and click on End Process Tree. Avoid ending any program that you are not familiar with. It may be required for your computer to function correctly. 
Step 4: Re-launch your game to see if you have solved your issue.

If you are on Windows 8 or Windows 10, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Right-click your taskbar and open Task Manager.

Step 2: Access the Processes tab and check your current CPU. Also, check memory usage to see what processes are using your resources the most.

Step 3: Right-click the resource-consuming process and select End task. Always avoid ending programs that you’re not familiar with. These programs may be critical for the functioning of your PC. 
Step 5: Re-launch Discord to see if you have fixed the problem. 

If the error is still not fixed after ending all unnecessary programs, move to the next potential solution below.

Solution 2: Turning off/on Hardware Acceleration 

Applications use the standard CPU on your computer when they are running. If you perform a big task, like sharing your screen, your app will make use of other hardware components on your computer to work properly.

If your hardware is suitable, enabling Hardware Acceleration will result in your application. However, if your device is weak, this feature may cause problems for you. To check if this is the core issue, turn off Hardware Acceleration on Discord if it’s on, or vice versa by following these steps:

Step 1: Run Discord, then click the Settings icon. 
Step 2: Click Appearance, if Hardware Acceleration is on the turn it off, or vice versa.
Step 3: Click, OK.
Step 4: Reopen Discord to see if this has resolved your issue.

If the issue is still not fixed after turning off/on hardware acceleration, move to the next potential solution below.

Solution 3: Updating Your Drivers

Video or audio lagging issues often occur when you’re using the spoilt graphics driver or audio driver. You must have the latest correct driver for your hardware devices at all times.

If you’ve performed all the solutions above and the problem is still not fixed, then the problem is from the current drivers installed on your PC. Your graphics drivers are either corrupt or outdated. You can update your drivers manually or automatically. Just follow the steps below;

If you’re using an  NVIDIA graphics card, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Press Win+R simultaneously to invoke the Run box
Step 2: Enter msconfig, click OK to open System Configurations.
Step 3: Click the Boot tab and check Safe boot. Click OK
Step 4: Click Restart and boot into Safe Mode. 
Step 5: Click This PC > Local Disk C. You will see the NVIDIA folder. Delete the folder
Step 6: Open the Run dialog by clicking  Start and then Run
Step 7: Enter “devmgmt.msc” in the run box. Click the OK button. The Device Manager window will open. 
Step 8: Open the “Display Adapters” field and right-click on the Nvidia adapter you wish to uninstall. Then select “Uninstall.” 
Step 9: Click “OK” to remove the adapter from the list and uninstall the driver
Step 10: Press Win+R  simultaneously to invoke the Run box
Step 11: Open Systems configuration by entering msconfig 
Step 12: Click the Boot tab, uncheck Safe boot, and click OK.
Step 13: Click Restart.
Step 14: Download the latest NVIDIA driver
Step 15: Install the NVIDIA driver. Click the Custom installation option and tick all the boxes including the “perform clean install” box
Step 16: Restart your PC

If you’re using an AMD graphics card, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Download the AMD Cleanup Utility
Step 2: Access the downloaded file and double-click on “AMDCleanupUtility.exe.’
Step 3: Reboot the system and run the utility in safe mode.
Step 4: A dialogue box will pop up stating that AMD Cleanup Utility will delete all AMD driver and application components. Click OK
Step 5: Once the process is complete, click Finish.
Step 6: Now reboot your PC

Now you need to install the latest driver update. To do this, just follow these steps;

Step 1: Visit the AMD Driver Support Page. Go to the section, Auto-Detect, and Install Radeon Graphics Drivers for Windows.
Step 2: Click  DOWNLOAD NOW 
Step 3: Run the downloaded file 
Step 4: Click Install 
Step 5: The tool will launch automatically. Click Accept and Install to proceed.
Step 6: The tool will detect the installed AMD graphics product and system configuration and display Recommended and Optional driver packages that are compatible with your graphics product
Step 7: Select the version you want and click Express installation.
Step 8: Once this process is done, restart your computer

If you have an integrated graphics (Intel)

Step 1: Press Win + R to launch a Run
Step 2: Enter devmgmt.msc into the Run dialog and press Enter. The Device Manager will open.
Step 3: Expand the Display adapters and right-click on your graphics drivers.
Step 4: Click Uninstall 
Step 5: Now restart your PC. Once your PC is on, it will automatically reinstall the graphics drivers.
Step 6: Check if you have fixed the issue.

If the issue is still not solved after updating your graphics drivers, move to the next potential solution below.

Solution 4: Clearing Discord Cache Files

When you have too many cache files and cookies accumulated on your computer, the Discord app will likely start lagging. To clear the Discord cache files, you need to follow the steps below.

Step 1: Quit the Discord app.
Step 2: On the keyboard, press the Windows logo key + R at the same time. Performing this operation will open the Run dialog.
Step 3: In the run dialog, type the following command; %APPDATA%/Discord/Cache and hit the Enter button on the keyboard.
Step 4: Press the Ctrl key + A simultaneously on your keyboard. This will highlight all the files.
Step 5: Hit the Del key on your keyboard to delete all the selected files.
Step 6: Re-launch Discord to check if you have fixed the issue.

If, after clearing discord cache files, the issue is still not fixed, move to the next potential solution below.

Solution 5: Changing The Power Settings

The power plan of most computers is often set to Balanced by default. Sometimes, this slows down your computer to save energy. Your discord app could be lagging because of this reason. You can smoothly change the power settings by following the steps below.

Step 1: Press the Windows logo key and type control. Click on the Control panel. 
Step 2: Under View by the option, click on Large Icons. 
Step 3: Click on Power Options.
Step 4: Click on High Performance.
Step 5: Now, Restart your PC and Open Discord to check if you have fixed it. Discord should now be able to run without lags.

If, after changing the power settings, the issue is still not fixed, move to the next potential solution below.

Solution 6: Resetting Discord Voice Settings

Improper voice settings can also lead to Discord lagging issues. You can smoothly reset discord voice settings to default by following the steps below.

Step 1: Launch Discord and click the Settings icon.
Step 2: Access the Voice & Video option and click on Reset Voice Settings.
Step 3: Click, OK.
Step 4: Share your screen again to test if you have a fixed issue. The lagging problem should be fixed by now. 

If, after changing resetting discord voice settings, the issue is still not fixed, move to the next potential solution below. 

Solution 7: Updating Discord 

Updating the discord app is another effective way to fix lagging issues. Although it is unlikely that the reason for this issue is an outdated version of the discord app, I have found that this solution works for some people. To update your discord app, you need to follow the steps below carefully.

Step 1: Press Windows + R, type “appwiz.cpl” in the dialogue box, and press Enter.
Step 2: Once in the application manager, search for the entry of Discord. Right-click on it and select Uninstall.
Step 3: Now restart your computer completely. Now go to the Discord official website and download the client fresh to an accessible location. Downloading Fresh Discord
Step 4: Now install the application and restart your computer again. Check if the issue is resolved.

If the problem is still not solved after updating the app, move down to the next potential solution below.

Solution 8: Uninstall and Reinstall the Discord app

Uninstalling and reinstalling your Discord app another right way to fix lagging problems. I found out that this method is useful when there is some kind of bug within the app, or when there is an incomplete installation. It is easy to do, and I’m going to show you how to do it. 

The following guidelines will help you on how to uninstall and reinstall the discord app.

To uninstall:

Step 1: Hold down the Windows key + X simultaneously and then click the Apps and features option.
Step 2: Search for Discord in the app list and select it.
Step 3: Click the Uninstall app option, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation process.

To reinstall:

Step 1: Download the updated version of the discord app.
Step 2: Run the installer and complete the setup process by following the instructions.
Step 3: Log into your account again and check to see if the issue is resolved.
