Do I need Windows’ firewall if I have Avast?

Computer safety is a rising concern for users as we have seen many leaks, hacks, and other instructions into a world growing increasingly reliant on cloud storage initiatives to store personal data.

Many rely on antivirus or firewall solutions to safeguard their device, but they fail to pair the two together to ensure optimal security. There are many options on the market to consider.

You might need Windows’ firewall with Avast antivirus. Since Avast offers different tiered plans, you will need to upgrade past the free version to access the firewall. The most common solution is to run Avast free and Windows’ firewall together if you don’t want to upgrade.

If you have upgraded your Avast membership and run a premium or business version, it would be best to turn off the windows firewall and allow your Avast firewall and antivirus solution to run together. Running both firewalls could cause internal problems, slower performance, and other minor issues that can be easily avoided.

Is Avast a firewall?

Avast is a free antivirus software that provides upgradeable features. Some features you can access with Avast are:

  • Premium security
  • Smart home security
  • Secure VPN
  • Firewall protection

These features are spread throughout different plans and a firewall is only one feature of Avast antivirus software. They are a full-service premium online security firm that can protect you every step of the way on your digital devices.

Does Avast have a firewall?

Avast does have a firewall. A firewall acts as an essential piece of internet and software security to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic that passes through your network. The firewall scans for hackers, malware, and other unauthorized information that could potentially put you at risk.

A firewall is the first line of defense in your software security army and Avast has you covered. Avast offers a firewall to select users who purchase it with their premium plans.

Does Avast business have a firewall?

Avast offers business plans to serve as an all-in-one cybersecurity dashboard for one team. It keeps business owners secure and confident in their system in place. It is an easy-to-deploy solution built to provide maximum protection to businesses.

Avast business is designed to streamline IT departments resources and give those businesses more security. Avast business does offer a firewall that can secure a business of any size.

The plans range anywhere from 1 device to over 1,000 devices. The firewall can be accessed on both cloud managed and business managed clients to provide flexibility for customers.

Does Avast premium have a firewall?

Avast premium offers a firewall. Firewall is a feature in Avast Premium Security and Avast Omni. Keep your firewall enabled when activating your Avast premium subscription to stay protected and secure.

The Avast firewall is a robust two-way firewall. It is the heart and soul of this security suite. It has a default feature known as “Auto-decide”. This mode will make the decisions on it’s own regarding each program that it faces. This mode can also be changed to allow, block, and ask with more flexibility.

Avast firewall also runs traffic analysis and decides what to do. The program has complex decision making ability and monitoring features to protect your network from attacks that may exploit application or operating system weaknesses.

Does free Avast have a firewall?

Avast free does not have a firewall. This is a very basic antivirus system and it is highly recommended to upgrade to a premium version to ensure safety and security.

Avast free is essentially a basic malware protection software but it does offer much more than competing free products on the market. It provides a network security scanner, password manager, browser protection, and WiFi security scans.

Avast free is the best free antivirus solution available and would be our top recommendation, however for the best software protection we advise on paying for a plan to keep you safe.

Is AVG and Avast the same company?

Yes AVG is owned by Avast but they remained separate products under their own brand name when the merger happened. They operate as one company with two product names to maintain their dominant grasp over the internet security industry.

AVG also does provide a firewall solution. Similar to Avast, you will need to upgrade your freemium plan to a paid subscription to receive access to this firewall.

AVG is known for having a lower price and easier access to cheaper plans but Avast touts stronger features and a better firewall capability for both home and business users.

Overall, the products are the most similar on the market but the slight edge goes to Avast due to strong protection and better add-ons such as password protection manager and VPN protection.

What are alternatives to Avast?

One of the primary competitors I would compare Avast with when choosing a firewall is ESET. They consistently compete with Avast providing an excellent range of features and firewall capabilities. Which one is the best choice?

ESET vs Avast

Both providers are leading antivirus and firewall providers so this is a difficult choice. They both offer a broad range of features. ESET does offer more additional features and is known for high end customer support and a smoother user experience.

Here is a chart with a feature breakdown:

ESET Smart Security Premium Avast Ultimate
Antivirus and Antispyware Block viruses and other malware
Anti-Phishing Scan for Wi-Fi security weaknesses
Gamer Mode Secure your passwords
Exploit Blocker Avoid fake sites for safer shopping
UEFI Scanner Safely run suspicious apps in Sandbox
Cloud-Powered Scanning Lock out hackers with an advanced firewall
Small System Footprint Block annoying spam and phishing emails
Script-Based Attack Protection Get an extra layer of ransomware security
Ransomware Shield Stop webcam spying
Free Support in Local Language Permanently shred sensitive files
License Manager Automatically update apps
Banking and Payment Protection Avast Cleanup Premium
Personal Firewall Avast SecureLine VPN
Antispam Avast Passwords Premium
Network Attack Protection
Webcam Protection
Password Manager
Anti-Theft (Windows only feature)

While ESET may provide more features and provide users with better user interface and experience, Avast is the superior choice when looking for the best firewall solution. They are the top performer for antivirus and firewall solutions available in the market and the downsides are made up for by the superior product.
